Hi there, welcome to SDRadio for Thursday, September 2, 2010! Now broadcasting with vitamins. Jimmy Steele, Clear Channel Radio San Diego Operations Manager, announced the appointment of Joe Haze as Program Director for KHTS-FM “Channel 933”. In announcing Joe Haze’s appointment, Jimmy Steele said, “I am pleased to announce the promotion of our own “Haze” to Program Director of Channel 933. His passion for the station, level of experience and knowledge of the San Diego market, along with the respect of his peers make him the right choice to lead our programming efforts and continue to grow the Channel 933 brand. We are truly excited about the leadership that Haze will bring to our dynamic Channel 933 team!” Haze added, "This promotion is truly a dream come true for me. I have so much respect for the staff of Channel 933 and I look forward to working with this talented team to take the station to the next level of success. I am grateful for the continued guidance and leadership of my mentor and Operations Manager, Jimmy Steele and for the confidence placed in me by our President and Market Manager, Debbie Wagner.” Joe Haze Radio Biography: Haze started his radio journey in 1989 as an intern for KZZP-FM Phoenix. In early 1990 he moved to Jacksonville Florida to play the "Big Ape" mascot for the legendary Radio station WAPE-FM. After realizing he was under qualified for that position, he got his first on-air break on WAPE later that same year. In 1992 he took his talents across town to WJBT-FM to become the music director and the afternoon drive host. In 1997 Haze had the chance to move back to Phoenix to further his career but he chose to remain with the company and took a job at a start up radio station in San Diego. That station was and is KHTS-FM. He moved here to become the music director and first "official" night time air talent for Channel 933. Haze has remained the music director to this day and has leaned his knowledge of music and on-air talent to Clear Channel's sister station Star 94.1 as well. ~~ Debbie Wagner, Clear Channel Radio San Diego President and Market Manager, announced the addition of The Jim Rome Show to the on-air lineup of XTRA Sports 1360 AM (KLSD) beginning on Monday, October 4, 2010. Perhaps the most respected voice in the world of sports broadcasting, Jim Rome is the leading opinion-maker of his generation. As host of the nation’s premiere sports radio talk show, Rome is known for his aggressive, informed, rapid-fire dialogue. Jim has established himself as the top choice of athletes and fans who want to know what is going on beyond the scoreboard. The Jim Rome Show will air on XTRA Sports 1360 AM weekdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 Noon, following the popular Dan Patrick Show, which airs from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. The XTRA Sports lineup for the remainder of the day will include: Chris Ello from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 pm; The Chargers Power Hour from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm; and The Drive with Josh Rosenberg from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. “I am extremely excited to welcome Jim and his ‘Clones’ to XTRA Sports 1360. I remember when he launched The Jungle late night on XTRA Sports and was hooked. I can’t wait to have Dan Patrick and Jim Rome back-to-back every morning on XTRA,” said XTRA Program Director, Brian Wilson. Rome’s nationally syndicated radio program, The Jim Rome Show, a.k.a. The Jungle, airs on more than 200 radio stations each weekday and boasts more than two million listeners. Known as ‘Clones,’ this legion of fans live and breathe for Jim Rome’s “take” on the day’s major sports issues. His departure from conventional sports commentary has cultivated Rome’s unique dialogue with his listeners and garnered a large and loyal following. In addition to his daily radio show, Rome is host to ESPN’s Jim Rome Is Burning, a provocative sports talk show airing at daily 4:30 pm EST. The program originates from Los Angeles and features opinion, Rome’s “rants,” debate and guest appearances by some of the biggest name in sports. Rome’s broadcast career has included The Last Word with Jim Rome, a nightly show that ran for five years on Fox Sports Net, and a two-year stint hosting ESPN2’s Talk2. Rome began his radio career at KTMS, Santa Barbara as the “$5 dollar-an-hour” traffic reporter and covered UC Santa Barbara sports. He left KTMS for San Diego’s all-sports station, XTRA Sports 690. It was during a temporary stint on a late-night show for the station that Rome’s infamous “smack” (Jungle Glossary term meaning sports talk in a gloating, uninhibited or unbridled manner) was born. Jim’s style got listeners attention and lead to the creation of his show The Jungle, which went into syndication in 1996 with Premiere Radio Networks, who continues to expand its reach through affiliates nationwide. Rome graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1987, with a degree in Communications. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Janet and their two children. ~~ Visit KCBQRemembered.net for an exclusive video of the unveiling process. ~~ Parker News Service, your San Diego Newsclipping Agency that records all broadcast TV News 24 hours a day ! Welcome to SDRadio for Wednesday, September 1, 2010. This report in color and ((Stereo)) where available. Jeff Dotseth hangs up his headphones today at XTRA Sports 1360 today. The afternoon host with Josh Rosenburg. Jeff writes at his blog, " I have accepted a job working for a local San Diego company that sponsors MMA fighters. I will run their media department, and I am very excited for this new challenge. It comes at a price though, and that is saying goodbye to "The Drive". There could not be an easier (or funnier) way to make a paycheck then to hang out with Rosey for 4 hrs a day making fun of random people. It would have to be a pretty cool job offer to even make me consider packing up, and what do they always say.."The best jobs come when you are not looking"? That is what happened here. I will still be able to spend a ton of time with my kids, but after 20 years I am finally in the fight game." MMA is mixed martial arts. For the time being, Josh will sit solo, but that is not expected to last long. In other news, Jim Rome packs his bags and moves to XTRA Sports in October. Main reason: Clear Channel Communications owns the syndication company, the show, and the station. ~~ Sean Hannity brought his 2010 Freedom Concert to San Diego last Saturday. Financial expert Ray Lucia dropped a bucket of money for the fund -- $50,000 was presented to Sean for the or the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund. The money comes through the Freedom Concerts and generous donations from the Sean Hannity Show and its listeners. The Scholarship Fund is designated for the education of children of U.S. service members who have been killed or 100-percent permanently disabled in an operational mission or training accident. (Photo by Andi Hazelwood -- thanks Andi!) ~~ Pat Michaels, one of the first talk-show hosts in San Diego, was buried at Point Loma on Monday. Radio historian David Leonard writes, "Pat worked in the news department of KCBQ in San Diego from 1963-1967. In 1966, he hosted a very a talk show on a Top 40 station called the "I Hate Pat Michaels" show. Station owner Lee Bartell had him promote liberal views in conservative-leaning San Diego." Michaels was mentioned for a nationwide talk show but he thought a young kid from Sacramento would be better. That was Rush Limbaugh. ~~ Clear Channel Communications President/Market Manager Debbie Wagner writes about the DSC Charity funds: "Clear Channel is proud to be an outstanding corporate citizen in San Diego and to do everything that we can to assist San Diegans in need. We take our responsibilities to handle funds of any type very seriously. As it relates to funds raised by members of one of our former shows for distribution to charitable causes in San Diego, we have and will continue to disburse these funds to reputable San Diego-based charitable organizations. Any assertion to the contrary is completely false." ~~ ~~ Parker News Service, your San Diego Newsclipping Agency that records all broadcast TV News 24 hours a day ! Story by Chris Carmichael and Chuck Karazsia Photos by Tony Pepper and Andi Hazelwood A monumental dedication ceremony attended by at least 400 fans and former alumni took place last Saturday. For twenty years from 1958 to 1978, KCBQ 1170 AM was the number one radio choice, at times attracting 60-percent of the population. The dedication ceremony to a legendary radio station and its 20-year era it produced premiered at the Kohl’s parking lot alongside Mission Gorge Road. The unveiling took place at the location where the building and six-200-foot towers once stood and sent 50,000 watts of music power to all points in San Diego. KCBQ AM 1170 changed the lives of all those involved on air – and fans everywhere. Captivating for those who were fortunate to hear and share its trend-setting music and orginal Top 40 radio personalities, news and staff, KCBQ provided entertainment, music and information for San Diego. The station became legendary and was often copied but never duplicated, KCBQ was one of the most listened to stations in San Diego and know world-wide for its programming excellence. With on-air hosts such as Jack Vincent, Scotty Day, Don Howard, Casey B. Quack, Scotty Day, Magic Christian, Gary Allyn, Neil Ross, Charlie Tuna, and many others, KCBQ put San Diego on the radio map and it was a destination that many wanted to work at. The station’s transmitter moved to Santee in the 1950s and 9416 Mission Gorge Road became the home of six 200-foot towers that beamed the 50,000 watts during the daytime. Many former KCBQ air personalities, as well as behind the scenes staff attended. Among those were Shotgun Tom Kelly, Lee Marshall, Nielson Ross, Jim Talley, Lee Marshall, and others. Unveiling monument were Santee Mayor Randy Voepel, Jack Vincent, Linda Irwin, Shotgun Tom Kelly, and President of Bartell hotels, Richard Bartell. He is the son of broadcaster Lee Bartell who built the original KCBQ facility in Santee. The monument was built with donations from former air staffers, engineers and the family of Lee Bartell. It was Bartell’s vision to put the station at the 50,000 watt level to provide a powerful punch in the AM waves. The monument features the pictures of the KCBQ building and the famous six towers. A list of more than 100 talented radio disc jockeys and newscasters are honored below. The monument was designed and built with cooperation with the City of Santee. The city provided the land and private donations built the monument. Charco Construction built the base with Seaman-Poe Monument doing the granite engraving. The monument is located on the south end of the Kohl’s parking lot in the 9400 block of Mission Gorge Road.
