There was a time that one station had half the listening audience in San Diego. That station, 1170 KCBQ, remains a legend in top 40 radio. It remains the most powerful daytime station in the market, pumping 50,000 watts from its present location north of Lakeside.
From this photo, the studios were downtown San Diego — and if you click on the image, you’ll see KFMB-TV in the back ground.
From the broadcast location in Santee, KCBQ was more than a local station — it was a landmark for pilots finding Gillespie Field.
There is a plan by former radio hosts, engineers, and fans of radio to recognize the Santee location. It is part of San Diego’s history; and part of radio history as 1170 KCBQ remains on the air, with the legendary call letters and providing a community service to the county.
Stay Tuned.
