December 29, 2004, a freakish storm hit San Diego, and at about 1:30 a.m., took out the signals of AM 1240, and shared facility of KURS-AM 1040.
The tower was a landmark near the Naval Station, as that told returning sailors they were at home port San Diego. (Scott Fybush photo.)
Using the best engineering advice in San Diego, then owner Jefferson Pilot completed a temporary fix to the tower and had both AM stations back on the air.
After nearly four years, a new “replacement” tower went up. The picture of the old tower is next to the new tower being built. The self supporting tower is close by the original site. Ironic the lot below the tower is for impounded cars.
Today, the call letters are KNSN-AM and is owned by Multicultural Broadcasting. Presently the Soul of San Diego is the format.
