So You Got A Smart Phone …..

1 October 2010

….and if you are like me, you could be a dumb operator. More and more users are making their phone the primary “radio” for listening enjoyment. Sure, Pandora and other services will give you non-stop music, but there’s nothing like the sounds of local San Diego radio — no matter where you are.

Here’s a look at smart phone applications for radio stations in San Diego and beyond (in no particular order).

Walrus FM: Hear Dave Mason, Frank Anthony via your phone world wide. Application includes a one-touch call to the radio host and email. Both functions work and I was talking with Frank this week within seconds. Available on iPhone only at this time.

Clear Channel‘s I Heart Radio: For iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, BlackBerry, Android, Chumby and Sonos. Strange name but offers over 1,500 stations coast-to-coast and beyond; and it is FREE. High-fidelity bonus. Offers special channels dedicated to JohnJay and Rich and other personalities nationwide — plus all Clear Channel stations in the San Diego market (KOGO, Star 94.1, Channel 933, New Country 95.7, Rock 105.3, 101.5 KGB, XTRA Sports 1360, and others). A very reliable application. Free. A must have.

Public Radio Exchange is an online marketplace for distribution, review, and licensing of public radio programming. Covers most public radio stations (includes KPBS-FM and KSDS-FM). Free.

CBS Radio Hear San Diego’s KyXy and Radio Sophie, plus the HD2 station of The Crossing. Includes out of town stations such as KNX, KCBS, WCBS-FM, and more. Free.

ESPN Radio: Hear the national broadcasts of ESPN Radio — and never miss a sports beat. $3 on iPhone only. Includes everything but major league baseball, NFL football due to broadcast restrictions.

MLB Network is a yearly fee. For 2010, it was about $16; but has been upped in price for several years (meaning 2011 will be more). Gives the user home and away audio radio feeds. Offers free video streaming for games on iPhone; also available for Android. Some features not available for all phones! Additional fee gets you national streaming of baseball games.

760 KFMB can be heard via the iPhone and possibly others at KFMB-AM. Likewise, San Diego Jack can be heard at San Diego Jack FM.

91X, Magic 92.5 and Z90 have stand along applications that are similar to Walurs FM, and 1090 AM. Bonus: free. XX1090′s application does not include any professional sports like baseball or football due to broadcast restrictions. Free.

Salem Broadcasting‘s KCBQ and KPRZ offer individual iPhone applications for their stations. Free.

Thanks to Lady Coe Lewis who called me yesterday. The 101.5 KGB morning host loves her radio station — but doesn’t like getting up early in the morning. More with Coe coming up soon.

Also noted: Sherry Knight, mid-day music specialist at Magic 92.5 FM is rooting for the enemy this weekend. Oh Sherry … but that’s baseball, and the season has been a roller-coaster ride. It’s hard to win a pennant, but it’s harder losing one. ~ Chuck Tanner
