RTNA, or the Radio and Television News Association, held their coveted “Golden Mike” last weekend. KOGO‘s Phil Farrar took the only San Diego win back to the county. Phil writes, “I won for best radio sports reporting. I did a story on Kassy Kova and Justin Ross. They are the only African-American ice dance team in the country to ever compete in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and they did it last year in Washington state.” (Phil hanging with Regis Philburn. Regis was in LA to receive his “Lifetime Achievement Award”.)
Phil filed the story about the couple, “They skated in the Novice Division. But they are quickly advancing and will be skating in the senior division this year. They are doing all of this from the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. They skate every morning at 5 a.m. except on Mondays when they get to the ice rink at 4:30 a.m.!”
Phil is humble, but proud of his dedication to work, “This is the second Golden Mike I have won. KOGO was the only San Diego station to win an award at the 61st Golden Mikes.” (KFI news director Chris Little presents the award to Phil.)
Indeed, a big win for the Phil and the station. Phil said that the report, titled, “Black Ice, Gold Mettle”, a report on the country’s only African American hopefuls—an Olympic ice dancing couple who live in San Diego.
