One of the joys of 2010 was taking an idea that Shotgun Tom Kelly and his wife Linda Irwin had — and make it a reality. Our group of “committee members” wanted to make a monument to 1170 KCBQ and and also wanted to remember the radio hosts who made the station the envy of the nation. (Todd Williams, Jack Vincent, Chris Carmichael, Shotgun Tom Kelly, Santee Mayor Randy Voepel.)
In nine months and about $10,000 raised from KCBQ hosts and fans, the monument stands as a reminder that Santee was the home to those 50,000 watt towers on Mission Gorge Road — and was a landmark for pilots that were landing at nearby Gillespie Field.
On Wednesday night, Shotgun Tom, Todd Williams, Jack Vincent, and myself presented thanks to the City of Santee for being a valuable assist on the project. Chuck Karazsia, and John Fewl, KCBQ fans were also in attendance and took photos.

Tommy Sablan from the KyXy Jeff and Jer Showgram writes, “In honor of Black Monday better known as Valentine’s Day for most people, Laura Cain who is on the Jeff and Jer Showgram will blow up a mannequin with pyro and huge explosives.
WHY? Because Laura needs to move on from a guy that just isn’t in to her. Laura is hung up on a guy that has no interest in Laura THAT WAY. So, on Valentine’s Day, Laura will officially move on from “him” and we found her a mannequin that will represent “him” and with the help of Stu Segall’s explosives team, Laura Cain at 7:30 Valentine’s morning will press a button and BLOW UP THE MANNEQUIN.
This will help her move on and maybe find that LOVE she has always wanted. See the KyXy.com web site for more info!

On top of the KCBQ Monument are two pictures of the land mark radio towers and the broadcast building. The monument is right off Mission Gorge Road in Santee near the shopping complex of Kohl’s and Lowes. Next time in the area, please stop by! It is the only nationally recognized radio monument in the U.S. that honors the station and the radio hosts.
Jack Hayes and KCBQ Owner Lee Bartel at the reunion held in the 90s. Lee bought the station, changed it to personality driven top 40 — and soon many stations were wanting the letter “Q” in their call letters.

KCBQ radio good guy — and great pool player — Jack Vincent.
Thanks to David Leonard, Bill Earl, Red Blanchard and Shotgun Tom Kelly.
