91X “RESURRECTION WEEKEND” KICKS OFF BLUE SEPTEMBER CAMPAIGN AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER

1 September 2011

Alternative rock station 91X will host a special “Resurrection Weekend,” on-air feature this Labor Day weekend, and launch support for the “Blue September,” a month-long program designed to raise awareness and prevention for prostate cancer.

“Resurrection Weekend,” turns back the clocks on the 91X playlist, bringing back classic songs from the 80′s and 90′s, and welcomes back 91X voices of the past including Mike Halloran, “Mad Max” Tolkoff, Oz Medina, Pam Wolfe, Robin Roth, and Steve West. The weekend feature begins tomorrow at noon.

Veteran DJ Steve West will put in the most labor of all with a marathon broadcast beginning Sunday at 6:00AM, and going through Labor Day Monday to support “Blue September.” West is a prostate cancer survivor and active proponent for getting tested early, when the disease is most treatable.

“Since my diagnosis, I have been astounded by the fact that more men die from prostate cancer than women do breast cancer, and yet only gets a fraction of the attention,” says West. “This year, I decided it was time to change that. Prostate cancer is a disease that has few or no symptoms in early stages, cure rates are higher and there are more treatment options with early detection. My goal is to encourage all men to get screened for prostate cancer.”

91X will also support the Blue September campaign by turning the iconic 91X yellow-and-black logo to blue for the month. 91X will also hold fundraising efforts for the Prostate Cancer Foundation with an auction of rock memorabilia, a bingo tournament at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on September 17 and listener donations via texting.

“For nearly 30 years, this radio station has done our best to serve the needs of the San Diego community, whether it’s the music we play or the causes we support. Obviously, it takes on an additional meaning when a cause directly affects one of our own,” says 91X Program Director Garret Capone. “Like many of my peers, I have been astonished to learn how many lives prostate cancer affects, and how important it is to do our part and educate others to be proactive and hopefully lower the rate of diagnosis.”

91X is owned and operated by Local Media San Diego, a privately held San Diego-based company. LMSD also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM).
