Mark sent in a rare gathering as photographed. Neil Armstrong rarely does public appearances and in an extreme rare chance, the first and last men on the moon were in San Diego recently. Alan Bean (Apollo 12 and set record in space on Skylab); Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11, first man to walk on the moon), Mark Larson (still grounded and was master of ceremonies at an event) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 & 17; last man on the moon). Shotgun Tom Kelly writes: “Fun was had by all even in the rain. George Junak of California Aircheck and Tom Reopelle from KNX were in Shotgun Tom’s Pool Hall over the weekend. Tom Reopelle was talking about the latest news story he was working on for KNX. It was the story that TMZ broke about helicopter pilot David Martz the FAA is investigating for fondling porn star Puma Swede while in flight.”

Univision Radio San Diego announced today the addition of Monica “La Chula” Hernandez to the La Nueva 106.5 KLNV-FM lineup.

Ms. Hernandez, well-known to San Diego-area listeners by her on-air moniker of “La Chula,” will take over the coveted 11:00AM-3:00PM time slot Monday through Saturday, in between the extremely successful “Piolin por la Mañana” morning show and the “El Pistolero” afternoon show.

“I’m very excited to join the La Nueva 106.5 team – it’s a great opportunity to work with the top-rated Spanish station in San Diego and reach a wider audience,” said Hernandez. (March 2009)

KyXy’s resident expert team on air includes Gene Knight and Sonny West. The soft rock ratings leader in the market is owned and operated by CBS Radio. This photo is from Liberty Station during the Wedding Marathon. Thanks Greener! (March 2009)

Larry The Precherman Thompson returned to radio in April.

“Preacherman’s” dream for gospel radio is obvious to anyone who has ever had a 5 minute conversation with him. The visionary and former radio personality for The Original Soul of San Diego has been granted an opportunity to return to 1040AM KURS.

“I am thankful to God for the opportunity and endeavor to build Him a 7/24 Gospel Radio Station.” This Radio Station will be known as San Diego’s Gospel Radio Station (A Radio Station for the Nation.)”

Jagger and Kristi were doing something pawfect in May. In fact, they want you to join, and it’ll be purrfect. Jagger posted: “Join us and Bodie for the San Diego Humane Society’s Annual ‘Walk For Animals‘ this Saturday, May 2nd. Join our MAGIC Walkers team or just come and browse all the vendors.”

The event took place at the Crown Point Shores, Mission Bay, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. The animal-friendly pledge walk will include great prizes for top pledge winners, a free pancake breakfast, and a vendor village complete with animal-related information booths, festivities, refreshments, live music, great shopping and more to celebrate the bond we have with our animals. Whether you can donate $5 or $25, every little bit helps our furry friends.

Added bonus: Dogs got free ice cream!

Frank Thompson, one of the original broadcasters from KOGO that made regular trips to the San Diego County Fair stopped by the Raised On Radio exhibit in July. Shotgun Tom Kelly took a picture of with his original promo photo.

KOGO’s Program Director Cliff Albert marked 30-years in the radio market in July! Known for his news duties in the market, it began across town at KFMB-AM 760.

1170 KCBQ’s Mark Larson writes about Cliff. “Yup, this week marks his 30th anniversary in San Diego radio! Paul Palmer and I hired him back in 1979. He couldn’t move until his wife had their second child (nice timing). So it wasn’t until July that he pulled into town to begin his historic tenure at KFMB.”

Mark continues, “I hired him in 79, then 25 years later he hired me at KOGO. So I figure that next time, in 2029 it’ll be my turn to hire Cliff again. Even though we might not have a clue what we’re doing by then. Clearly, no one else has the news savvy he has, and Clear Channel’s very fortunate to have him.”

FM 94/9’s morning man, Tommy Hough writes on his Facebook page about his drive home: “A sample of AM radio on the drive home: (Roger) Hedgecock is flame-throwing Ted Kennedy for allegedly screwing America on the day he died; John and Ken are calling state employees “slobs,” and whomever is guest-hosting Savage doesn’t even dispute a caller who claims Obama’s “60-closest advisors” are Communists. Some people find this to be entertaining, but many think this lunacy and vitriol is the basis for sound policy.”
(Roger is on KOGO, and John and Ken are on LA’s KFI.)

Star 94.1′s AJ made this the biggest drive by far: 100,000 toys for the kids.

Delana Bennett sent in a kick off picture: Here are Geena, Colbie Caillat, AJ, and Delana. They were hanging with Colbie this morning in the STAR 94.1 Lounge!

JohnJayRich In October, JohnJay and Rich started their show on Channel 933. Heard on seven stations from Colorado to the west coast, the two have extensive San Diego ties. JohnJay was a student at San Diego State and did one glorious shift at KCR. Rich Berra was known for his days with the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw show. (October 2009)

dsc-beerfestOver the weekend, the KGB micro-beer and chili contest was held at the Lakeside rodeo grounds.

The DSC did a special afternoon broadcast from East County to find out who had the best chili and also sampled much beer. (Pictured: Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn, and the Dean of American Sportscasters Cookie Chainsaw Randolph. (November 2009)
