Missing from airwaves: Jeff and Jer Showgram Day 140 | Mikey Show Day 21 | DSC Day 4

KPRi made changes yesterday. The station announced that Station Manager Bob Burch resigned from his position. Bob joined the station in 2005.

KPRi Co-owner Robert Hughes told AllAccess.com “This was a mutually agreeable, amicable — but nonetheless — difficult decision.” Co-owner Jonathan Schwartz added, “Bob Burch has always advocated what he thought was best for KPRi. We appreciate his many contributions to Compass Radio Group over the years we have worked together. We wish him the very best as he opens a new chapter in his career.”

Joining the station on February 1 is Haley Jones. She comes in from Los Angeles from 100.3 The Sound. She was the assistant Program Director and Music Director at the station.

“KPRI enters our 15th year as San Diego’s only independent station. We can’t think of a better way to open up a new year, a new decade and a new chapter for KPRI than with Haley Jones,” Jonathan said.

Haley said, “While Bonneville and The Sound have been a fantastic experience, this is an opportunity I’ve worked toward for a long time and the chance to do it in San Diego — I’m in! I look forward to making great radio at KPRi for many years to come.”

He’s a social new media expert, and Chris Cantore will bring it to the television screen this year. Yesterday, NBC San Diego and Chris announced a new partnership. He’ll chair Sounddiego. It’ll be part music “in association with cantore/creative. “Coming soon, we will be launching a music / arts / entertainment COMMUNITY.” Chris added, “I’m as “proud as a peacock”.

I’ll always look back at these last 4-5 months as powerful days. I’ll always remember reaching out to Rickards and giving him respect and getting respect back from him.

Hearing a common theme this week? Radio Fixture Mark Larson told KUSI that the market is playing it out. The economics of scale are playing it out. Jeff and Jer, Mikey and Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw are caught in an economic downturn.

Ad revenues are off. Remember, commercial stations rely on ads to pay for the talent, station overhead — and the transmitter that brings the programming to you.

As new media becomes a part of our lives, soon we will listen to radio on more devices — and it’ll be hard call it radio. Various electronic devices will bring San Diego stations far and wide.

Over Christmas, I drove to Colorado, as mentioned in a previous post. With my iPhone, I was able to hear KOGO from Sante Fe, New Mexico to Trinidad, Colorado without missing a beat.

It doesn’t stop there: I can listen to public radio KRCC at my work desk via an application from National Public Radio.

Radio delivery systems are being parsed and as the wireless medium becomes the ultimate DX machine. Miss WLS in Chicago, KFOG in San Francisco, or KCMO from Kansas City. There’s an app for that on various fronts.

So locally, as the economics of scale take place, it’s hoped that there is a way for the three recently dismissed shows to find a way on the radio here in America’s Finest City.

One more item, it is expected to be announced today the finalization of the assumption of Finest City Broadcasting by Broadcast Company of the Americas. Present staff members will learn their fate today.

Hey, I really think Halloran should be added to that list of missing from the airwaves. Yeah, he's not a show, but he's been the primary mover and shaker in the alternative airways here in San Diego for a very long time.

Oh, and Oravan -- Cantore has been pretty active. You should check out his internet radio site, www.legitradio.com if you want to hear him spin some tunes. Good stuff.
  • Agreed. Michael Halloran will be on the list of days off air.

That is so great to hear from Chris Cantore! I will be looking out for the program. Also, I'm just dying to find out what's to become of the new BCA stations. As always, thanks for keeping us in the loop Chris!
