~~

(Earlier today, reports of a snake bite on Iron Mountain were not confirmed by rescue workers. However, that is a frequent trail I do two to three times a week. Near the top I have heard rattlesnakes makin’ noise to stay away. Good friend John Van Zante sent in a timely article on the season.)

Hold onto your Dog! Step onto the Log! Rattlesnake Season is Here!

Spring brings out rattlesnakes following winter hibernation. Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) is reminding pets (and their people) that they can avoid snakebite by following a few simple rules.

“Sunset is when you’re most likely to encounter a rattlesnake,” according to RCHS spokesman John Van Zante. “People need footwear that gives protection. Keep your dog on a leash and on a well-used trail. And carry a stick. Hitting the bushes can scare snakes away.”

Other basic rules tips can save pets and their people:

* Don’t go places where there are likely to be snakes
* Don’t put your paws, hands or feet where you can’t see (like under a log or rock)
* Look before you leap. Step on a rock or log instead of jumping over it
* Take your cell phone for emergency (not to talk or text while you hike)
* If you stop to rest, look before you sit
* Be careful around water. Snakes can swim and they look like sticks in the water.
* If you see a snake…LEAVE IT ALONE!

Van Zante says that a rattlesnake’s strike distance can be one third to one half the length of its body and it’s faster than a human eye can see.

What should you do if you or your pet are bitten by a rattler? “”Probably most difficult, try to remain calm. If you panic or run, that spreads the venom faster. And get to a doctor ASAP.”

Try to remember what the snake looks like. Your veterinarian or Emergency Room will want to know how big, what color, shape of head, and anything else you can tell them.”

“We’ve also heard of people who pick up what they think is a dead snake, only to find that it’s resting. And even if it’s freshly dead, the bite-reflex can still be there. Leave it alone!”

And that old myth about sucking the venom out of a snake bite….That’s a myth.

To find your new pet or to learn more about pet safety visit Rancho Coastal Humane at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas, call 760-753-6413, or log on to www.sdpets.org.

Don’t miss the Adoption A’Fair on Saturday, May 19 from 11 – 2 at RCHS. Twenty animal shelters and rescue groups will attend the event with pets that need families NOW!

Lenny B checks in from Smooth 98.1.

“I want to keep you updated on what we’re doing. Since our Chula Vista girl, Jessica Sanchez is still in the race, destined to become America’s next Idol, I wanted to share with you some of the local enthusiasm that is illuminating our city. Being a San Diego native, I can say with certainty that something extraordinary is happening among the people who live here. It is not often our entire community spontaneously comes together with this type of pride and enthusiasm that is electrified with local spirit.

“I’m advising people to pause and drink it in because it is the San Diego residents that are making history along with their local American Idol contestant. Kids are making home made signs, schoolmates are creating youtube channels and Facebook fan pages, and strangers are exposing an unprecedented camaraderie that was once associated with past generations. San Diegan’s are not just sharing zip codes, they are connecting as a family to cheer on their own young lady and local hero, Jessica Sanchez. What is potentially most bewildering, is that this is all happening organically with no promise of personal gain. Just pure good vibes!

“This Wednesday night, we’re expecting an even larger crowd to gather for our weekly “American Idol Viewing Party” at the Brewhouse at Eastlake, Jessica’s neighborhood. There are a few pleasantly unexpected additions to this Wednesday’s event that are worth mentioning. The Brewhouse management is providing a large video screen system that will project a larger than life visual of this Wednesday’s episode of American Idol so it can be view by a sea of expected Jessica Sanchez fans.

“A show of support and ground swell of excitement will be captured at 7:30 p.m., during the “Photo Flash Mob” when a scissor lift/cherry picker will raise our photographer high up in the air to capture the ocean of Jessica suporters. The video/photo of this multitude of well-wishers will be sent to Jessica to show her that her home town is cheering her on.

“The very popular life size Jessica cut-out will be available again for picture opportunities. The “red carpet paparazzi” will again be in place as amateur and professional photographers line our glamorous Hollywood style red carpet leading to the Brewhouse entrance.

“I know this would make a great local piece illustrating how San Diego comes together to encourage a local rising star. The sentiment is heartwarming and it proves San Diego holds true to it’s big, “small town” reputation.

This report in ((Stereo)) where available!

~~
Little Tommy Sablan from the Jeff and Jer Showgram on KyXy 96.5 in San Diego was given the honor to emcee the Jessica Sanchez Hero Homecoming for American Idol. The longtime Jeff and Jer producer was the logical choice by the family because Tommy’s love and connection for Chula Vista. Tommy along with Jessica was born and raised in Chula Vista, California. (Duncan Wood photo. Tommy introducing Jessica at Chula Vista)

Over 20,000 people showed up at Eastlake High School’s football field on Saturday May 12th to welcome home Jessica Sanchez. The crowd arrived at 9am and waited for two full hours for Jessica to arrive. During the wait, there was entertainment and Tommy’s legendary witt.

At 11:01am when Jessica appeared on the field, the crowd cheered as the American Idol cameras were rolling as she strolled through the screaming crowd and on to the stage to await Tommy’s greeting and questions.

When asked what did she miss most about Chula Vista, she said, “The people. I miss the people!” Jessica performed three songs for the crowd. Try a Little Tenderness, I Will Always Love You, and Proud Mary.

When Tommy did a quick interview on the radio with her on KyXy 96.5, he ended asking if she could hook him up with Jennifer Lopez and she said, “Okay, I will see what I can do.”

Tommy is very proud of Jessica Sanchez and said on stage that the best thing about Jessica is that she gives young kids hope and a feeling they can also dream big.

It was less than a year ago, when the 16 year old teen was one of thousands and thousands of Idol hopefuls at her first try out at San Diego’s Petco Park. Now, she is the TOP Three on American Idol!” (Flower photo from “TheMouth@TDS.net”; photos thanks to Tommy)

Woody and Wilcox who were previously in the San Diego market, are up to no good on the east coast. They captured and did a great parody of a national magazine.

The are heard on New Rock 1065 The End, in Charlotte, North Carolina, and may be heard via “I Heart Radio”.

He was heard on KBRT-AM 740 all across Southern California. He is also a legendary newsman from his days on KFWB-AM in Los Angeles.

David Manzi crossed paths with him many times. He writes, “Rich Buhler was probably one of five people I’ve ever listened to in my life that I found so captivating that I just would stay in my car after arriving somewhere, amazed at the wisdom this man had deep in his soul. I was listening to him the day Keith Green was killed in a plane accident. He was taking call after call asking how God could let such a tragedy occur. Rich said something I think of so very often all these many years later–and that I often share with others. As he consoled callers, at one point he said, “God never says ‘oops.’” A great loss to the broadcasting community, but for him, to live was indeed Christ, and to die is his great gain.

“He eventually was carried nationally, but for many years, he was just our Southern California treasure. I worked for Salem Communications for a number of years, which syndicated him. Besides the wonderful day I spent with him at his office, I got to meet him a number of times when he would be in San Diego and he would do his show from our studios. One kind of silly memory I have is how he absolutely loved pistachios–could eat them nonstop. We always made sure to have bowls of pistachios everywhere if he were coming down!”

(David is presently with KECR-AM.)

His son, Keith, posted on Facebook: “… our daddy completed his life’s course and enters now into the rest of our Lord.

“We cannot thank you enough for the love, support, and prayer during this journey—God’s mercy has been tangible.

“The funeral is planned for Saturday, May 19th at Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Anaheim, CA, and will be open to anyone who wishes to attend. Final details will be posted here on CaringBridge in the next few days.

“We are grieving in our souls but rejoicing in Christ!”

Lenny B, morning host at Smooth 98.1 writes: “I want you to know about an American Idol event we’re holding on Wednesday nights at the Brewhouse at Eastlake. Chula Vista’s hometown girl and Idol contestant Jessica Sanchez has quite a following and our “Idol Viewing Parties,” taking place right in her own neighborhood, continue to grow each week. This Wednesday night, we’re expecting an even bigger crowd to join us as we cheer her on.

“Before last wednesday’s Idol show, I reached out to a photography San Diego Meet Up group (meetup.com) and offered them some “red carpet paparazzi” practice. To our surprise, about 10 amateur and professional photographers brought their expensive cameras and lenses to line up on our modest Hollywood type red carpet leading to the Brewhouse entrance. It was a welcome dose of Hollywood excitement right here in San Diego. Jessica Sanchez’s fans felt like celebrities themselves as they arrived, greeted with flash blasts, to watch American Idol with us. Parents, elementary school mates and family members all stopped by to take a picture with Jessica herself in our photo booth. Yes, it was only a cardboard cut-out of the destined idol star, but Facebook friends viewing the pictures would barely know the difference.”
